Totnes Castle is a castle with a rich history spanning several centuries.  It all began in 1067 when a Norman knight, Juhell, built and occupied the castle, marking its beginnings.  Sixteen years after that, in 1083, Roger de Nonant seized control of the castle. In 1205, William de Brose, 3rd Lord of Bramber and descendant of Juhel, restored the castle.  But there is no evidence that he lived there. Instead, his son, Reginald the Brose, built the first stone castle on the site.

In 1326, the de la Zouch clan assumed ownership of the castle and undertook extensive renovations, transforming the structure of the castle.  In 1485, the castle became more prosperous when Sir Richard Edgecombe became the new owner of Totnes Castle. Finally, in 1764, Edward Seymour, 9th Duke of Somerset, and his family took up residence in the castle.  Then the palace was abandoned.
